Roofers Weymouth

Are you looking for roofers in Weymouth?

Roof repairs, roof replacements, flat roofing, chimneys and lead work for homes across Weymouth, Portland and the Dorset coast

We're roofers based in Weymouth, and we've now finished more than a thousand roofing jobs across the town and the villages around it. That covers everything from a single slipped slate above a café on St Thomas Street to complete re-roofs on postwar houses in Southill. Roofs here deal with a particular mix of weather: plenty of sun, rain that arrives sideways off the bay, and gales that can turn a loose ridge tile into a missile overnight. We know how the local roofs are built, where they tend to fail, and how to put them right so they stay right.

Why Weymouth homes need a roofer who knows the coast

Roofing is the same trade everywhere, but the conditions aren't. These are the local factors we build every job around.

  • Wind that comes in sideways

Gales across Weymouth Bay drive rain upwards under slates and tiles. Proper headlaps, mechanical fixings and sealed verges matter more here than on a sheltered inland roof.

  • More sun than most of the UK

Wyke Regis averages around 1,900 hours of sunshine a year, a good third more than the UK as a whole. Ultraviolet light is what ages felt, sealants and cheap flat roofs fastest, so we specify materials that cope with it.

  • Two centuries of housing

Georgian terraces on the Esplanade, Victorian terraces in Park District and Greenhill, and the later estates at Southill and Littlemoor each roof differently and fail differently.

  • Conservation areas and listed buildings

Much of central Weymouth is protected. We know when Dorset Council's conservation officers need to be involved and which materials they'll expect.

  • Stone roofs nearby

Out on Portland and down towards Purbeck, heavy stone roofs and stone-built chimneys need specialist handling that a standard tile roofer may not offer.

  • Gulls and moss

Herring gulls nest on chimneys and in valleys, and moss on north-facing slopes holds water against the slates. A check every few years catches the small things early.

Why choose us

Why people in Weymouth choose us

Plenty of firms can put tiles on a roof. What customers tell us they value is everything around that.

  • We look in your loft as well as at your roof, so the quote is based on the cause rather than a guess.
  • You get photos of the problem before you're asked to agree to anything.
  • Quotes name the actual materials and fixings, so you can compare them fairly.
  • Over a thousand roofing projects finished in and around Weymouth.
  • A signed 10 year guarantee on roof replacements, handed over with completion photos.
"Most of the people who ask us to quote for a new roof in Weymouth leave with a repair price instead, because their roof still has years left in it."

Our process

How a roofing job works with us

  1. 1

    Free roof survey

We look at the roof from outside and from the loft, check the condition of slates or tiles, flashings, gutters and timbers, and take photos as we go.

  2. 2

    Written, itemised quote

You get a fixed price with VAT shown, the materials named and access costs listed. If we think a repair will do instead of a replacement, we'll tell you.

  3. 3

    Scaffold and site set-up

Ladders, towers or scaffold go up depending on the job. If anything has to stand on the pavement or road, we arrange it so people can still pass safely underneath.

  4. 4

    Strip out and inspect

Failed slates, tiles, felt or lead come off. Battens, rafters and decking are checked as soon as they're exposed, and any surprises are shown to you before we carry on.

  5. 5

    Build back properly

Breathable membrane, treated battens, mechanical fixings for every slate or tile, and lead or tested dry-fix systems at every junction.

  6. 6

    Check every detail

Before we come down we check ridges, verges, valleys and flashings, run water through the gutters and make sure the loft is ventilated.

  7. 7

    Clean up and hand over

Scaffold down, waste gone, gutters clear. You get completion photos and, on a roof replacement, your signed 10 year guarantee.

Our guarantee

Ten years on a new roof, written down and signed

When we replace a roof in Weymouth, the paperwork you're handed at the end will, on all but a handful of unusual jobs, include a 10 year guarantee on the work. If yours is one of the exceptions, you'll know at quote stage, not after. It names your address, says what was done and is dated the day we sign the roof off. It covers the installation itself, meaning the battens, membrane, fixings, the slates or tiles and the junctions where the roof meets walls and chimneys. If any of that lets water in through a fault in how it went on, we come back and fix it without charging you.

A guarantee that long only makes sense if the roof is built properly underneath, so it shapes the job from day one. Every slate or tile is mechanically fixed to the current British Standard rather than relying on its own weight, which matters on a stretch of coast where the wind arrives with nothing in its way. Breathable membrane goes on before the battens. Valleys, abutments and chimneys get proper lead or a tested dry-fix system, never a smear of mortar that cracks in its third winter.

Materials carry their own manufacturer cover on top, and that differs from product to product. Your paperwork says which one applies to your roof.

Materials

Roofing materials we work with

Weymouth's roofs are a mix of what came in by sea, by rail and from the quarries down the road. These are the materials we fit and repair most often.

Welsh slate

The classic covering on Victorian and Georgian streets. Long-lasting and thin, with a blue-grey colour.

Spanish slate

A good-value natural slate, darker and a little thicker. Choose quality grades carefully.

Clay plain tile

Small, warm-coloured tiles common on interwar houses. Heavy but very long-lived.

Concrete interlocking tile

The usual postwar covering. Quick to lay and economical, available in many profiles.

Stone slate

Heavy, thick and traditional on older Portland and Purbeck buildings. Specialist work.

Fibre cement slate

A lighter man-made alternative to natural slate, useful where weight or budget is an issue.

Questions about roofers in Weymouth

How much does a roofer cost in Weymouth?

Small repairs typically start at around £150, chimney and lead work runs from a few hundred pounds upwards, and a full roof replacement on an average house is usually £7,000 to £14,000. We give a fixed written price after a free survey, so you know the figure before work starts.

Do you offer free roof surveys and quotes?

Yes. We'll come out, look at the roof from outside and from the loft, and give you a written quote with photos. There's no charge and no obligation.

What guarantee do you give?

Our roof replacements come with a 10 year guarantee as standard, provided as a signed document when the job is finished. Materials also carry their manufacturers' own guarantees.

Do I need planning permission for roof work in Weymouth?

Like-for-like repairs and re-roofing don't usually need planning permission. Listed buildings, properties in a conservation area and changes to the roof's shape or material can be different. Dorset Council is the planning authority for Weymouth, and we'll help you check what applies.

Can you work on older and listed properties?

Yes. A lot of Weymouth's housing is Georgian or Victorian, and we regularly repair slate roofs, lime-pointed chimneys and traditional leadwork. We'll use matching materials and methods suited to the building.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover Weymouth and Portland, and the surrounding towns including Dorchester, Chickerell, Bridport, Wareham, Wool, Swanage and Upton, plus the villages in between.

Areas we cover around Weymouth

We're based in Weymouth and work right across this part of Dorset. Portland and Chickerell are on our doorstep, Dorchester is just over the Ridgeway, and we regularly travel west to Bridport and east into Purbeck for Wareham, Wool and Swanage, and as far as Upton on the edge of Poole Harbour.
