Guttering, Fascias & Soffits In Weymouth
Are your gutters overflowing or your fascias flaking?
Gutter repairs, clearing and replacement, plus new uPVC fascias, soffits and bargeboards
Gutters are dull right up until they stop working. Then water pours down the front wall, soaks the brickwork, finds its way round window frames and turns up inside as damp. On most Weymouth houses the cause is simple: a blocked outlet, a joint that's sagged out of line, or a rotten fascia board that the gutter is no longer fixed to. We clear, repair and replace gutters and downpipes, and fit new fascias, soffits and bargeboards that won't need painting again.

Roofline work that solves the problem
Gutters and fascias work as a system. Fix one without looking at the other and the problem comes back. Here's what we include.
01
Gutters set to a proper fall
A gutter needs a gentle slope towards the outlet. Over the years brackets loosen and runs sag, so water collects in the dips and overflows. We re-line or replace brackets so the run drains.
02
Joints resealed or replaced
Leaking union joints are the commonest gutter fault. Sometimes a new seal is enough; on old or brittle systems it's more economical to renew the run than chase leaks along it.
03
Fascias checked for rot
Gutters screw into the fascia board. If the timber behind is soft, the brackets pull out. We test the boards and replace rotten timber rather than covering it up.
04
Soffits that keep birds out
Gaps in old soffits let birds and wasps nest in the eaves. New uPVC soffits close those gaps and can include ventilation so the loft still breathes.
05
Downpipes cleared to the drain
A gutter can only drain as fast as the downpipe below it. We check downpipes are clear right through and that the shoe or gully at the bottom isn't silted up.
06
Colours and profiles to suit
Half-round, square, ogee and deep-flow gutters in black, white, brown, grey and other colours. On period houses we can match cast-iron styles in aluminium or cast iron itself.

Heavy downpours and leaves from the downs
Rain in Weymouth tends to come in bursts carried on the wind, not a gentle drizzle. A gutter that copes perfectly well with ordinary rain can be overwhelmed by a squall off the bay, especially if it's undersized for the roof above or half full of moss washed down from the slates.
Inland, around Upwey, Broadwey and the edges of town near the Ridgeway, mature trees drop leaves and seeds into gutters every autumn. A clear-out before winter is cheap compared with fixing the damp that a blocked gutter leaves behind on a rendered wall.
"Nine times out of ten when we're called to a gutter that's 'pouring over' in Weymouth, it's a blockage or a sagging joint, not a failed gutter."
How we sort out gutters and roofline
- 1
Look at the whole roofline
We check gutters, downpipes, fascias, soffits and bargeboards together from the ground and from ladders, noting overflow stains on walls and any sagging runs.
- 2
Written quote with options
If a clear-out and repair will do, that's what we quote. If replacement is better value, the quote explains why and lists both options.
- 3
Safe access
Most roofline work is done from ladders with stand-offs or a tower. Three-storey houses or long elevations may need scaffold, which is shown separately on the quote.
- 4
Clear and remove
Gutters are cleared of moss and silt. Where boards or gutters are being replaced, the old system is taken down carefully and taken away for disposal.
- 5
Fascias and soffits fitted
Rotten timber is replaced, then new uPVC fascias and vented soffits are fixed to the rafter feet, with an eaves protection tray to carry water into the gutter.
- 6
New gutters and downpipes
Brackets are set to a fall towards each outlet, gutters and downpipes clipped in, and joints sealed. Downpipes are connected to the existing drain or gully.
- 7
Test and tidy
We run water through the new system to check it drains, clear up and take away every offcut and old length of gutter.
Ten years on a new roof, written down and signed
When we replace a roof in Weymouth, the paperwork you're handed at the end will, on all but a handful of unusual jobs, include a 10 year guarantee on the work. If yours is one of the exceptions, you'll know at quote stage, not after. It names your address, says what was done and is dated the day we sign the roof off. It covers the installation itself, meaning the battens, membrane, fixings, the slates or tiles and the junctions where the roof meets walls and chimneys. If any of that lets water in through a fault in how it went on, we come back and fix it without charging you.
A guarantee that long only makes sense if the roof is built properly underneath, so it shapes the job from day one. Every slate or tile is mechanically fixed to the current British Standard rather than relying on its own weight, which matters on a stretch of coast where the wind arrives with nothing in its way. Breathable membrane goes on before the battens. Valleys, abutments and chimneys get proper lead or a tested dry-fix system, never a smear of mortar that cracks in its third winter.
Materials carry their own manufacturer cover on top, and that differs from product to product. Your paperwork says which one applies to your roof.

What to look for in a guttering and roofline company
They don't cap over rotten timber
Fitting thin uPVC cladding over old fascia boards is quick and cheap, and it hides the problem rather than fixing it. Ask whether the boards will be replaced or capped. Full replacement is the better job on anything showing rot.
They think about ventilation
New soffits that seal the eaves completely can cut off airflow to the loft and cause condensation. A good installer will fit vented soffits or over-fascia vents where the roof needs them.
They check the eaves felt
On many older roofs the felt at the eaves has rotted away, so rain runs behind the gutter. An eaves protection tray fitted with new fascias fixes this. If it isn't mentioned, ask.

| Comparison point | uPVC | Aluminium | Cast iron |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expected lifespan | 20 to 30 years | 40 years or more | 100 years with maintenance |
| Maintenance | Clear out yearly | Clear out yearly | Clear out and repaint every few years |
| Appearance | Modern, wide colour range | Crisp, can mimic cast iron | Traditional, heavy profile |
| Weight | Very light | Light | Heavy, needs strong fixings |
| Relative cost | Lowest | Mid to high | Highest |
| Best for | Most modern and postwar houses | Period houses and long runs | Listed buildings and conservation areas |
Period houses and conservation areas
On Georgian and Victorian streets the guttering is part of how the house looks. Plastic replacements on a terrace that still has cast iron next door can stand out, and on a listed building or in a conservation area the council may expect traditional materials.
We can repair and repaint existing cast iron, fit new cast iron, or use cast aluminium that looks the part at a lighter weight and lower cost.

Guttering and roofline costs in Weymouth
A gutter clean and joint repair on a semi is a small job. New gutters and downpipes cost more, and a full replacement of fascias, soffits and gutters across the front and back of a house is the top of the range. Three-storey houses and scaffold add to the total.
Guttering, fascia and soffit questions
How often should gutters be cleaned?
Once a year is right for most houses, ideally in late autumn once the leaves are down. Houses under trees, or with mossy roofs, may need it twice.
Why do my gutters overflow in heavy rain?
Usually a blockage at the outlet, a sagging section with no fall, or a gutter that's too small for the roof area above. We'll find out which and fix the cause.
Should I replace fascias and gutters at the same time?
If the fascias need replacing, yes. The gutters have to come down anyway, so doing both together saves on labour and access, and you end up with a matching system.
Can you fit new fascias over the old ones?
Capping over old boards is possible when the timber is completely sound, but we rarely recommend it. Rot spreads unseen behind the cladding. Replacing the boards costs a little more and solves the problem properly.
Do you clean gutters on their own?
Yes. A gutter clear-out with a check of the joints and downpipes is a useful job in its own right, and we'll tell you if we spot anything else on the roof while we're up there.
Are uPVC fascias really maintenance free?
They don't need painting and won't rot, which is the main point. A wipe down every year or two keeps them looking clean, especially near the sea or a busy road.
